SINGAPORE: The John C Stennis Strike Group, the centrepiece of the US Navy’s "Great Green Fleet", docked at Changi Naval Base in Singapore on Tuesday (Apr 19).

The strike group, together with 8,500 sailors, is in Singapore for a regularly scheduled port visit after completing an annual bilateral training exercise in the Philippines, according to the website of the Commander of the US Pacific Fleet.

The USS John C Stennis is moored at Changi Naval Base with the guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and the guided-missile destroyers USS Chung-Hoon and USS William P Lawrence.

Another guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale will rejoin the strike group on Wednesday after completing Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo 2016, an exercise involving 35 countries focused on maritime peacekeeping operations and increasing interoperability between regional navies.
During the visit in Singapore, the personnel will visit and engage with the Republic of Singapore Navy. The sailors will also have the opportunity to explore the city and participate in community events and “morale, welfare and recreation tours”, the website said.

Rear Admiral Ron Boxall, commander of the strike group, said the visit is a “fantastic opportunity to enhance partnerships, develop goodwill, and create friendships”.

The “Great Green Fleet” is an ambitious initiative by the United States to power US Navy ships around the world with a blend of traditional fuels and biofuels.

The John C Stennis Strike Group has travelled more than 20,000 nautical miles in its Western Pacific deployment using an advanced biofuel blend and other energy-saving practices to reduce fuel consumption and extend operational capabilities, the website said.
